Take Me Home: January 20, 2009

There are few things as heartbreaking as seeing someone's pet, dead, at the side of the road. A few years ago, I saw a cat on the boulevard in front of a school. Afraid it might upset the kids, I knocked at a nearby door, and the homeowner helped me put the poor thing into a plastic bag. Don't let this happen to your pets -- please keep them indoors or on a leash.

Only two cats today -- I hope to get up to the shelter to take some more pictures of the animals who are waiting to share their lives with you:

Agnes is two years old, and came from the home of a cat hoarder along with 40 other cats (more information here). She loves to cuddle and would be happy living with feline friends. Agnes looks similar to Strider, a wonderful cat I shared my life with many years ago. TRANSFERED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

Two-year-old Bonkers is a fun-loving, friendly boy who gets along with other cats. He loves to roam, so his new family will have to make sure he remains indoors. TRANSFERED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

The centre (Mohill) is located at 16586 Woodbine Avenue, just south of Mulock/Vivian Sideroad. Their adoption hours are:

Monday to Wednesday & Saturday:
12 - 6 p.m.
Thursday & Friday: 12 - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 12 - 5 p.m.

For more information on these and the many other pets available, go to Petfinder.com or the OSPCA York Region Website.

Years ago when still in high school, was waiting at bus stop for the school bus one morning when a beautiful german shepherd darted across Yonge St & was run over by 18 wheeler... obviously in a lot of pain. I ran to the nearest house, asked them to call Animal Control, & ran back to wait with doggy. All 6 other students got on the bus and left without another thought. Doggy passed away before help arrived, but I stayed with him. He had tags and was a beautiful dog. Animal control guy was very nice and said the dog most likely appreciated the petting & kind words before he passed on. I am adamant as a result that pets are on leashes, or indoors, or properly fenced yards as a result. It truly was heartbreaking for me as a young teen.

I'm not in the least surprised that you rushed to the dog's rescue -- you were just as sweet in your teens as you are now.

The cat I found was just around the corner from your house -- a beautiful, long-haired tabby.
