Nothing to report on the OSPCA front, except that the facility was cleaned from top to bottom, and any necessary repairs are being done. When will it reopen? I have no idea. But I did hear that Abbotsford, an Aurora vet clinic that took in many of the OSPCA animals, is making them available for adoption. They have some photos posted here, but the page loads incredibly slowly -- it might just be faster to go over there.

As you've probably heard, no more of the shelter animals will be euthanized unless they are too ill to treat. You can get all the news online, so I won't repeat it here, but I believe we owe huge thanks to the protesters -- they really made a difference. I hope to return to my volunteer duties soon, but have no idea when we will be allowed back. I'll let you know as soon as I hear.

Many of you are searching for information about the recent decision by York Region OSPCA, located in Newmarket, to euthanize all the animals at the shelter because of the ringworm outbreak. I know and love many of those animals, and am devastated, but plan to continue volunteering at the centre.

The shelter will, once again, fill up, and those animals will need our help. I don't agree with their decision, but I do believe in the organization's long-term goal of making sure each and every pet finds a safe forever-home. Thousands of animals have been successfully adopted from the shelter, and with your assistance, more will be adopted in the future. If we truly want to make a difference, we have to educate our kids, friends and neighbours -- don't let your dogs or cats wander, neuter and spay them, and report all cases of abuse.

Volunteer. Be a part of the team that will make sure this never happens again. And if you're as heartbroken as I am, then just imagine how this has destroyed the souls of the wonderful staff who care for the animals each day. They deserve our support and encouragement. I don't know how they will deal with the emotional fallout from what has happened.

Update: May 12

Just read that protesters are screaming "Murderers" at staff entering and leaving the building. They couldn't be more wrong. These staff members have worked hard, for years, to give top-quality care to the shelter animals. Volunteers, knowing how committed the staff are, would never scream such a thing, so it must be the people who have never set foot inside the building to lend a helping hand. Everyone has a right to protest, but know your facts first -- the staff are far more upset by this than anyone else.

The popular microchip clinics are coming up once again. From the York Region OSPCA website:

I took some new photos at Mohill, yesterday. Walking into one of the cat rooms, I felt as if I'd entered black cat heaven -- six or seven lovely, black cats immediately surrounded me, looking for attention. What a bonanza! If you're considering adopting a new pet, please think about one (or two) or the many adult black cats that are available. Unfortunately, these dark-furred felines are the last to find a home. I have no idea why, but I can assure you that black fur is not any more of a hassle than any other colour. And my own black cat, Meeko, hasn't brought us anything but the very best of luck.

These are just a few of the fifteen sleek, black models available. Because there are so many, most have collars with their names printed. Why not visit, and introduce yourself to: Artemis, Salem, Zilda, Preston, Nathan, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Emerald, Rosalee, Pagan, Austin, Karina, Taylor, Nikademus, and Rosie. They range in age from nine months to seven years.

Bear, a seven-month old silver-marten rabbit, has a beautiful black and tan coat. He's looking for a home where he can run around (or is that hop around?), and have fun. ADOPTED

Sago is just under five years old, and is looking for a home without children. She's friendly and fun-loving, but needs a family with the patience to teach her the finer points of dog etiquette.

When you drop by the centre to adopt, or simply to socialize with the animals, don't forget to thank the wonderful people who work there. They do a super job of caring for the many pets waiting for their forever homes.

Seven year old, Pagan, is declawed. When he's not presiding from his purple couch, he will be checking out everything that's going on in the area. ADOPTED

Rolex is a doberman-mix and just eight months, but full-grown at 90 pounds. He's cuddly, energetic and looking for a home without children. ADOPTED

Sweet-faced Dawn is two years old and looking for a life-long companion. ADOPTED

When an animal is brought into the OSPCA, it receives the following:

Shelter and general care
Vet care
Extra medical treatment or surgery, if required
Food
Vaccinations
Micro-chipping
Deworming and flea treatment
Spaying/neutering

That's why a cat from the shelter might cost $150, and a dog up to $300. The OSPCA does not receive any government handouts, relying instead on money from donations, fundraisers, surrender fees, and adoptions. And speaking of adoptions, the shelter is bursting at the seams with pets waiting for a new home and family:

Take home six year olds, Karmela and Strider, and pay for just one cat. These two have been together all their lives and can't be separated. As I've said before, it's far better to have two cats so they can keep each other company. ADOPTED

Beauty, a Rottweiler/Shepherd mix, is a very excited three month old puppy. She's (impatiently) waiting for a family to call her own. ADOPTED

Just a year-and-a-half old, Lacey is an affectionate, slim kitty. ADOPTED

Five-year-old, Nemo, is a happy boy, with loads of energy. He gets along well with most, but would prefer a home without children. ADOPTED

A brand new year, and a brand new chance for these wonderful animals to find a home:

Seven-month-old, Tim, rolled around on his Christmas blanket waiting to have his belly rubbed. I obliged. He can be a bit shy at first, but warms up very quickly. ADOPTED

Tara watched my progress around the room. She's a curious, friendly, nine-month old Tabby. ADOPTED

Because they want to stay together, five-year-old sisters, Josie and Nappy, are two for the price of one. Note: Josie is no longer available for adoption. ADOPTED

A few weeks ago, Global Television News featured the Meet Your Match program at the York Region OSPCA. They called it E-Harmony for cats. The following weekend, 28 cats were adopted by viewers of the show! Usually it takes a month to find homes for that many cats.

A few of the cats on this blog are still waiting to be adopted, so I thought I might post their photos once again. They've been waiting so long for a lap to call their own:

Seven-month-old Muffin looks so much like my own cat, Meeko, that I was tempted to scoop her up and take her home. Muffin is playful, energetic and, it appears, waiting for someone to play ball with her. ADOPTED

Eight month old, Liz, is friendly and sweet, but doesn't like being picked up. I view this as a challenge, so each time I go to the shelter, I'm going to visit Liz -- and maybe I can coax her into trusting me enough to pick her up. Or maybe her beautiful face will turn your head, and she'll be adopted. ADOPTED

Monkey is about one and a half years old and very affectionate. She was surrendered to the shelter because of her previous owner's health problems. It's time for Monkey to have a forever home. ADOPTED

These two are just so cute. Two and a half-year-olds, Mickey and Francis appear to be on the best of terms. Although they don't need to be adopted together, it would be a shame to break them apart. Francis has been adopted, but Mickey (on the left) is still available. ADOPTED

There will be another microchip clinic at the Newmarket location on November 28th. Even if your pet doesn't go outside, microchipping will ensure his return should he slip out the door.

Like all the kittens available for adoption at the centre, one month old Steve is as cute as a button. ADOPTED

Four-year-old Chuck is a stray that no one claimed. At the centre since March, Chuck is looking for a quiet home where he can be petted and lay in the sun. Chuck gets along well with other cats, so if you already have a cat (or would like to adopt two), he's your guy! ADOPTED

The shelter is bursting at the seams with kittens and cats, so if you've been considering adopting, now is the time. You don't want all those Christmas ribbons and boxes to go to waste -- they are perfect entertainment for felines. Oh, and speaking of entertainment, the shelter cats can always use new toys -- small stuffed toys are especially welcome (no catnip, please!). Here are this week's featured pets. Five year old, Baby, is a Shar-Pei mix, looking for a mature home. He's a lovable guy who gets along well with other dogs. ADOPTED

Sweet, two year old, Abby is a Border Collie, Siberian Husky mix. She loves long walks, but not loud noises. A little shy at first, Abby needs a family who understands her breed and can provide undivided attention. ADOPTED

Marble, a Chinchilla, is between 2-5 years old. She needs a family who will let her out of her cage, and socialize with her. I have read that Chinchillas can live up to 20 years, so if you do adopt Marble, she will love you for a long time. ADOPTED

One-year-old, Kally, is a sweet, curious cat who will make a great companion. ADOPTED

Sorry for delay in posting -- it's been a busy month. The York Region OSPCA is implementing "Meet Your Match", a program that matches people with the cat(s) that best reflect what they're looking for. The program will soon include dogs. How does it work? All cats, over nine months of age, are assessed and assigned a colour-coded personality type. After filling out a short questionnaire, adopters are given a card that directs them to the cat(s) who will best suit what they desire in a pet. Of course, they are free to choose any cat -- even if their colours don't match.

Why not visit Mohill, fill out a questionnaire, and meet some of the cats who will fit your lifestyle and family? It's easy, and it works. Here are just a few of the animals you might see when you drop in:

Blue and yellow, Skyy, is a curious, two year old, male budgie. ADOPTED

Gorgeous Freya is five years old, and needs a family who is willing to give her lots of love and socializing. Actually, it's important that all birds be given a lot of attention. ADOPTED

I've been a bit busy lately, so have only a few kitties to share:

Tony, a long-haired, black and white male, likes attention and loves to be brushed. His room mate, Sam, is friendly and enjoys a good snuggle. Both are two years old. BOTH ADOPTED

Now, here's a a lovely cat who was once at the York Region shelter (where I had the pleasure of meeting her), but was transferred to Cambridge many, many months ago, Her name is Stella, and it's time she was given a special place in someone's home. It absolutely breaks my heart that Stella hasn't yet been adopted -- I would do so in a flash if my own cat was able to share her space with a friend. If you're looking for a companion, and live in the Cambridge area (or are willing to make the trip), please give serious consideration to this wonderful feline. The York Region OSPCA will be holding Microchip Clinics at the shelter on August 29, September 26, October 24 and November 28, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. For just $20.00, your pet can easily be identified should he/she accidentally get loose. This is a great opportunity to keep your cat or dog safe. For more information, call 905-898-7122, ext. 306.

Brothers, Skeldon (black) and Sega (black and white) , are just one year old, and need to be adopted together (two for the price of one!). Not only are they friendly and affectionate, they're also munchkins. The main feature of this breed are the cats' short legs. They're so darn cute! Unfortunately, Skeldon and Sega are carriers of the FIP virus which means that they can't be taken into a home with other cats. It also means that the shelter is having difficulty finding a family for these two guys. If you are able, please come to the OSPCA and take a look -- you're sure to fall in love. The staff will be happy to tell you all you need to know about the breed and FIP. ADOPTED

Maximus, a purebred Dutch rabbit, is just one and a half years old. He loves to be around people -- especially if they pet and rub him. He's had a rough start in life, but is a happy guy who would love to spend time with you. ADOPTED

Mohawk, an Abyssinian guinea pig, is just over a year old. She's a sweet, curious little thing who would like to be adopted with one or both of her sisters, Scoober and Ribena. ADOPTED

Sweet, eight-month-old Patience is looking for fun -- and a home to call her own. Take a closer look at Patience's paw -- she's a polydactyl. ADOPTED

Gorgeous Jason is just four months old. He came to the centre as a stray but is now ready to settle into a safe and loving home. ADOPTED

Esther is six years old, declawed, and looking for someone to rub her belly and shower her with love. That should be easy, considering how sweet and beautiful she is. ADOPTED

Mitsy is two years old and gets along well with other cats. She also likes to be around people, so is perfect for a family that is looking for a sociable, friendly feline. ADOPTED

If I could do it all over again, I'd adopt two cats together -- siblings, perhaps. Although it may double the costs, the cats could play together and keep each other company. I'd also adopt older cats. Kittens are cuddly and cute, but those adult felines are so deserving of a loving home. Of course, choosing which two cats I'd take home would be a problem -- they're all so wonderful. Check 'em out:

If you're lucky enough to visit the centre on a day when they're offering two cats for the price of one, then these brothers would make choosing two cats easy. Milo and Momo are five years old, declawed, and affectionate -- with each other and humans. ADOPTED

Silver-haired, ten year old, Rain, would like a quiet home where she can get lots of love. Rain is looking for a lap to sit in -- why not drop by to see if you're a good fit? ADOPTED

Just nine months old, Grace is still full of energy. Watch out when you kneel down to pat her -- Grace is apt to jump on your shoulders! She's a sweet, affectionate kitty. ADOPTED

Seems I'm always filling a bag or box then hauling the stuff up to Goodwill. Affectionate Roscoe, a Irish wolfhound mix, is six years old. Look at his beautiful colouring! He gets along well with other dogs, but not so much with kids or cats. ADOPTED

Five month old Bambi has fur as soft as down -- I could have cuddled her all afternoon (and she would have loved it). Bambi gets along well with other cats. ADOPTED

Kenny (white on chest) and Cartman are five months old. These two boys were all over me, purring and snuggling. BOTH ADOPTED

I thought this photo of Bambi and Kenny playing under the blanket was so cute (click on photo to enlarge). Believe it or not, Cartman is also under there somewhere.

Murry was far too busy stalking a fly on the outside of the glass to stop and smile for the camera. He's nine months old, and has lived with children. He's a cuddler and a talker. ADOPTED

Not everyone can take a new pet home, but we can all visit those in the shelters who are waiting for one. The dogs, cats, and bunnies (to name just a few) need to socialize, making it easier for these animals to adjust to life with humans. Not only will your visits benefit the pets, they'll benefit you as well. I mean, how can you not feel good when ten cats clamor fore your attention, or a dog's tail threatens to fly off simply from wagging it so hard? Drop by for ust an hour each week. Think about it.

These three sweet cats are still available, so I thought I might list them again:

Two-year-old Sunshine watched carefully as I snapped pictures and pet the other cats. When I finally came to her, she purred happily. I think she may have even smiled. TRANSFERRED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

John was transferred to the Cambridge shelter almost two months ago. This playful boy needs a home, so if your out that way, please scoop him up. ADOPTED

Tiny, one year old Nora is so sweet and loves to have her belly rubbed. She gets along well with other cats, but would be just as happy to have you all to herself. Nora is still waiting for you! ADOPTED

Spring has sprung, which means more kittens being taken in by the shelter. There's already too many animals needing homes. If you have a place in your own home for one more, take a look at this week's bounty:

Cookie is a playful ten-month-old. When I threw a ball through the crinkle sack, she loved diving in after it. ADOPTED

Rats, Bert and Ernie, are just three months old. They're curious little guys, and are only $10.00 each. ADOPTED

Maple

Maple is an 8 1/2 year old female boxer, active and in good health. She's friendly and enjoys meeting new friends. ADOPTED

Belle

Four-year-old Belle is sweet, but a bit shy. She's a shepherd/border Collie/Lab mix who has been with Maple (above) her whole life. Belle would like to be adopted with her best friend, so it would be wonderful if the two of them could share your home. ADOPTED

Since starting this blog and volunteering at the OSPCA, I've noticed that black cats are often the last ones to be adopted. Is it because of the myths surrounding black cats? Do some people believe the fur will be more noticeable on their furniture and carpets? I don't know, but my own cat, Meeko, is black, and all I can say is that there are no problems with the fur, and I've always had incredibly good luck. So please, consider taking home one of the many black cats available at both the York Region and Cambridge shelters. And speaking of black cats, I've included a couple today (click on the photos to enlarge):

One year old Nora is so sweet and loves to have her belly rubbed. She gets along well with other cats, but would be just as happy to have you all to herself. ADOPTED

Smokie is about three years old and very affectionate. He's a big boy with thick fur, so will have to be brushed often -- in fact, I plan on going to the shelter tomorrow to do just that (I know he'll love it). ADOPTED

Black and white Kudos is just ten months old. He came to the shelter as a stray, loves to play, and as you can see, gets along well with other cats. ADOPTED

Heart is a loving, eleven-month-old female tabby who has been at the shelter for too long. It's time for her to settle into her own home. ADOPTED

Three-year-old Pie is a Holland Lop rabbit who would like to be adopted with her brother Bear (not pictured). ADOPTED

The York Region Ontario SPCA offers a weekly summer program called "Connected Kids Camp" for children aged 8 - 12. My daughter attended the camp when she was younger, and loved it. Go here for more information.

Two-year-old Adam is curious and affectionate, and has the sweetest face. He came to the shelter as a stray, and is looking for a home he can call his own. TRANSFERRED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

Just under one year old, energetic and playful Kollai is a Siberian Husky cross who needs a family that understands the breed. He has some anxiety issues, and is on a special diet. Kollai understands basic commands and gets along well with his fellow canines. ADOPTED

Henry is five years old, and extremely affectionate. He followed and rubbed against me as I made my way around the room. I think this is one very loyal cat. ADOPTED

Good news! The Mohill Clinic in Newmarket is now open. For just $50, owners can have their pets spayed or neutered. Not only that, the centre is offering vaccinations for about $10. Spread the word, and take advantage of this wonderful service. Phone for an appointment.

I've been ill, so unable to visit the shelter for the past month. Now feeling much better, I went today to take pictures and see some friends (both the furry and un-furry kind). Here are just a few of the furry ones I ran into (and they just happen to available for adoption):

These two one year old boys are John and Paul (I wonder if there was a Ringo and George too?). I can't tell them apart, but they were both very playful when I visited. BOTH ADOPTED

Julian is a sweet, two year old male. He loves to be picked up, and will bury his nose into the crook of your arm. If you have lots of love and attention to give, then Julian might be the cat for you. TRANSFERRED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

During December, almost $10,000 was raised by the York Region OSPCA's Tree of Hope, held at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket. Because they don't receive any government funding, the centre relies on the success of campaigns such as this, and the continued donations from the public and corporate world.

Now, let's take a look at the cute and cuddly side of the business. Remember to click on the photo to enlarge:

The words "snuggle puss" were created to describe these two six-month-old brothers. Ryan (black) and Horatio (tabby) will love to bury their noses into your neck, all the while purring madly. They are delightful. ADOPTED

I don't know much about rats, but can tell you that Quinn is young and quite energetic. ADOPTED

Just one year old, Taz was a stray who is now looking for a family that will provide lots of love and play. As with all strays, you must be extra diligent about not letting them outside. ADOPTED

When you choose your new cat, make sure you pick up one of the free Iams New Cat Care Guides at the front desk. It has loads of information about introducing a cat into your home -- the supplies you'll need, vaccination schedules, and how to litter train your new pet (In most cases, you just need to show your cat where the box is, and they'll figure it out).

Fella is declawed, just two years old, and has the biggest saucer-like eyes. He's feeling a bit shy in his new surroundings, but he's a sweet boy who does like to be petted. ADOPTED

One-year-old Maggie is a quiet, affectionate girl who loves to play. ADOPTED

If you like to be snuggled, then one and a half-year-old Lady is for you because she'll happily purr in your arms for hours. She wants to go to a home where there are no other cats. TRANSFERRED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

I have a bit of a history with one and a half year old Wesley that you can read about here. I adore this cat -- he's affectionate, intelligent and playful -- and I'd take him home in a snap if my own cat could get along well with others. If you take Wesley home, I want visitation rights. Salem is a playful five-year-old girl who is declawed and would love a home where she can be brushed regularly. ADOPTED

You'll notice that some of the cats in earlier posts have been "Transferred to Cambridge Shelter". Unlike the York Region shelter, Cambridge didn't have any cats. Aptly named Cleopatra is an adult female rabbit who gets along well with Guinea pigs. ADOPTED

Daisy, a Red Ear Slider turtle, is approximately five years old, and would be suitable for a family with knowledge of the breed.ADOPTED

Baily, a male, is just under a year old. He would enjoy a loving home and, as you can see, a place to sleep in the sun. ADOPTED

Budgies, Sunshine (yellow male) and Cloud (blue female), are two-years-old and come as a package deal at $40. They will need a home with someone who has the time to care for and socialize with them. ADOPTED

Sunrise, a stray, is a Terrier mix. At this time, her age is uncertain, but when she is spayed, the vet will have a better idea of how old she is. Sunrise is a sweet girl who would prefer an active family. In the picture, she's looking at the door -- I think she's waiting for you to come visit. ADOPTED

Morris is just under a year old and is looking for a loving and dependable family. He was brought in by the Investigation Department because his previous owner could not care for him. On the day this photo was taken, he was luxuriating in the sunshine. ADOPTED

There are few things as heartbreaking as seeing someone's pet, dead, at the side of the road. A few years ago, I saw a cat on the boulevard in front of a school. Afraid it might upset the kids, I knocked at a nearby door, and the homeowner helped me put the poor thing into a plastic bag. Don't let this happen to your pets -- please keep them indoors or on a leash.

Only two cats today -- I hope to get up to the shelter to take some more pictures of the animals who are waiting to share their lives with you:

Agnes is two years old, and came from the home of a cat hoarder along with 40 other cats (more information here). She loves to cuddle and would be happy living with feline friends. Agnes looks similar to Strider, a wonderful cat I shared my life with many years ago. TRANSFERED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

Two-year-old Bonkers is a fun-loving, friendly boy who gets along with other cats. He loves to roam, so his new family will have to make sure he remains indoors. TRANSFERED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

For Christmas, my parents gave me money to donate to the OSPCA. It was the perfect gift. It's something to consider the next time you're buying a birthday or Christmas gift for an animal lover.

And now for the highlights of today's post:

These two-month-old puppies are so darn cute, but as you can see, they were near-impossible to photograph. After 10 minutes of taking pictures of puppy backs and bottoms, I snapped the one below. Not perfect, but I'll settle for it. My advice -- drop into the centre, and fall in love. ADOPTED

I just love a Torti's colouring. Two-year-old Clair arrived at the shelter with 42 other cats. She's friendly and outgoing -- and obviously enjoys showing off her acrobatic skills. Like all cats and dogs over 6 months old, Clair has been spayed. ADOPTED

Wendy is two years old, and gets along with people and cats. She likes to play and loves being brushed. Sounds like she'd be perfect for the family who is looking for a sociable pet. TRANSFERRED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

One-year-old, Siberian Husky cross, Pluto and his brother, Tiger, are not used to living indoors or being touched by people. They will require patience, an understanding of their breed, and a home without children. It's a tough task, but I'll bet the rewards will be worth the hard work. ADOPTED

Very soon, the new spay / neuter clinic will open at the York Region OSPCA. The clinic will provide the service for a nominal fee -- I believe it's $50, but I'll check and update if necessary. The Society is hoping to reap the benefits in the next few years with fewer unwanted kittens and puppies showing up on their doorstep. I'll let you know when it's up and running.

Just under a year old, Kendra is such a sweetie (I mean, look at that face!). This affectionate kitty gets along well with other cats and loves to be patted. ADOPTED

Being a volunteer at the OSPCA is so rewarding. If you've thought about signing up, please don't hesitate any longer -- the shelter and the animals need your help. Goldie, a gorgeous, spayed two-year-old with a very sweet nature, just arrived in the adoption area. In fact, she was one of the cats whose cage I've cleaned for the past couple of months. Goldie requires a special diet because of a sensitive tummy. ADOPTED in just a few days.

Two-year-old Vanna is ready for adoption. She's affectionate, playful, and beautiful to boot. Although she presently shares space with other cats, she'd really like to be the only pet in your home. MOVED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

Ted, a neutered male, is not yet two years old. He's an active boy who gets along well with other cats. MOVED TO CAMBRIDGE SHELTER

Good news -- many of the animals featured earlier have been adopted! Take a moment to scroll down to the earlier posts. This is wonderful on so many levels because not only does it mean these pets now have a home, it also means some of the dogs, cats and smaller animals will move to the front of the centre so they can run around, and be viewed and played with by the public. I know more animals are adopted during the Christmas season, but let's try to keep the momentum going.

Tito is an energetic 8 month old, spayed female who gets along well with both cats and people. She has such an interesting face. As you can see, she loves her toy mouse: ADOPTED

Seven-month-olds Rainbow and Jellybean raced to the side of their cage when I entered the room to snap this photo. They allowed me to pet them, then they followed my progress around the room. I'm not familiar with bunny behaviour, but these two Dutch rabbits were almost dog-like in their eagerness for attention. Very cute. ADOPTED

Libby is an eight-month-old spayed female who came into the shelter with 42 other cats. Although she's a bit shy at first, she seems to enjoy attention -- a warm lap and kind words are all that's needed. ADOPTED

The centre is located at 16586 Woodbine Avenue, just south of Mulock/Vivian Sideroad. Their adoption hours are:

If you live in York Region and shop at the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket (and who doesn't at this time of year?), please drop by the "Tree of Hope", and hang a paw in memory of your pet. The money raised is going to a very good cause -- those pets at the OSPCA who are still waiting for a home. The tree is located on the lower level by the main escalators. Hours: 10:00 am - 9:00 pm until December 24th.

Randy is a sweet, seven-month-old, neutered male. He came to the shelter with ten other cats, and is the last to be adopted. He's an adventurer who has lived with both cats and dogs. ADOPTED

Robert is a curious, one-year-old, neutered male. He gets along famously with other cats and children, but may be a bit shy when he first meets you. ADOPTED

Hubbs is a nine-year-old, neutered male. I believe he's the oldest resident at the shelter, but that doesn't mean he's any less lovable. In fact, the older animals may be even more appreciative of their new families because they know just how wonderful it is to have their own home. Why not come in and meet Hubbs? There's a good chance your lap will be a perfect fit. ADOPTED

I had no idea that taking pictures of these wonderful animals would be so difficult -- the cats and dogs are so affectionate, it's hard to get anything but extreme close-ups! Here are today's featured pets, available for adoption at the OSPCA in Newmarket, Ontario (click on each photo to enlarge):

Roger is a gorgeous, long-haired, neutered male. He's one year old, very alert and is looking for a home that provides lots of love and attention. How can you resist that face? ADOPTED

Sabina is a six-year old spayed Calico who likes other cats. She looks very comfortable, doesn't she? I wonder if she comes with the house? ADOPTED

Thomas has been at the shelter for one year -- its longest-staying resident. He's a quiet, seven-year-old neutered tabby who gets along with other cats. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Thomas had a home he could call his own in the New Year? ADOPTED. I couldn't be happier for him!

Tucker is a one-year-old neutered male Border Collie. He'd do best in a home that has knowledge and experience with this breed. Like all Border Collies, Tucker needs lots of opportunities to exercise and learn. I spent only a few moments with him, and was warmed by his friendliness and desire to play. ADOPTED

Ben and Jerry are brothers who would love to be adopted into the same home as they often snuggle together. They're two years old, neutered, and very affectionate. Although they look nothing alike, these two guys are a matched set that can't be broken up. ADOPTED TOGETHER

Playful, four-month-old Lightning loves to cuddle around your face and neck -- I had a hard time walking away from this sweet kitten. She'd like other cat friends but would be just as happy to be in a one cat household. Lightning has a small hernia that is operable. A voucher to have her spayed at six months of age is included. ADOPTED

Volunteering at the OSPCA

Before I begin posting photos of the animals, I thought I should give you an idea of what goes on at the shelter. All I can add to this (originally posted on my other blog, Animal Ovation) is that the people working behind the scenes are incredible, and I'm thankful knowing the animals are so well cared for while they await adoption.

It was a long process involving orientation, interview and training, but I'm finally a full-fledged volunteer at the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), York Region Branch. Yesterday was my first day on the "job", and it was amazing.

First, let me give you the lay of the land at the centre: there is only so much room for cats in the adoption area -- I'm guessing 60 or so -- where the public can view and mix with the animals. The other two hundred or more cats are kept in the back until there is room in the public area, or they're okayed for adoption. This is where I was set to work cleaning their cages, litter boxes, bedding and dishes. These large cages are cleaned daily, and many rooms have windows, but I don't think I need to tell you that it's heart-breaking to see these animals waiting for the next step in their lives -- getting into the adoption area so they can find loving families.

[Excuse me while I take a moment to have a bit of a cry. Surprisingly, I didn't cry while I was there -- it seems to be affecting me more now].

Okay, I'm back.

It took four hours for myself and another new volunteer to clean the cages of about 35 cats. I'm sure once we get the hang of it, we'll be able to speed up the process. Eventually, I'd like to take an extra hour or so to socialize with each cat, but there are other cages and rooms needing cleaning -- and there are only so many volunteers and staff to do the job.

It's obvious that the people working at the OSPCA love these animals, and I admire their dedication and hard work. But this is not the life that these cats signed up for -- they need a welcoming home, and room to run and play. Some of the cats in the back have been there for months! Please, if you know someone interested in adopting or buying a pet, steer them to the SPCA. There will always be people to buy the registered purebreds, but there are never enough to adopt from the shelters. These cats (and dogs) are gorgeous, friendly beings who deserve more.

Update: It now takes me about 5 1/2 hours to clean the same cages by myself, but I also take a few moments to pat, cuddle and talk to each cat. That's the fun part.
